Petit déj'

My favourite meal is dinner. Yes, it is. It is, after all, that meal when we can all sit down to eat and talk about our day. It is that meal that we put the most care into preparing, it is the fun meal, the get together meal, the relaxed meal (and let us ignore my boy's multiple tantrums at dinner time, let us just pretend they do not extist, for narratives' sake). If you happen to follow me on instagram, you know how lavish our dinners can get, especially on weekends. But my meal, that meal I like to enjoy alone, amidst a silent house, with ease and peacefully, that is breakfast.

Le petit déjeneur is the one meal I look forward to partake on my own, right after stepping out of bed, while hubby's gone off to work and kiddo's still asleep. The morning light comes in through my kitchen window, bathing my surroundings in a buttery, creamy claritude, all is quiet, all is silent, I feel rested and energised - ok, most days I do, right? - and hungry for the day ahead. It is the moment my head rests itsef and wakes up from the night slumbers, and starts to work slowly, carefully, and ideas come forth. It is the moment when I write my best pieces, and if I'm lucky and have slept well, these pieces stay with me all through the morning untill I find the time to sit down on my computer and write them out. It is the moment where I analyse my plots and find that maybe the story I had imagined is not what is going to be written, as new ideas are bound to spring up as I take my breakfast, as inspiration seems to be at its highest right after I take that first sip of my milk and coffee.

My breakfast is a very simple thing, actually. I hardly ever change it. I do not cook pancakes, or crepes for breakfast. Nor do I partake in the ingestion of bacon, eggs and what not so early in the morning. And those cartons of cereal, well, I get nauseated if I do ingest that first thing. SO my breakfast is of the simple kind, and does not stray much from this. A huge cup of milk - and I do mean huge, I love milk, though I only really like skimmed milk, how sad is that? - infused with an espresso, freshly gotten from my coffemaker, two slices of bread, some curd, some butter, a piece of fruit. Somedays might find me with a slice of cake, or a homemade muffin, somedays might be soda bread I'm having, others cornbread, mostly just a simple homemade loaf, filled with dried fruits, and bran, and oatmeal, fresh out of the bread maker, still warm and crunchy. I honestly believe that waking up to a kitchen filled with the smell of freshly baked bread makes any day start with the right mindset. The only other smell it is worth waking up to is the smell of toast, don't you agree?

How about you, what is your favourite meal?
