A hamburger before I take off

I'm not a fan of the ole' burger. Which I wish I was, as I get these strong feelings of inadequacy for not craving hamburgers and weiners and street style food, for not frequenting those overpriced hotspots that are all the craze these days. Sameas with gin. Ugh. I cannot bear gin. And yet, lately it is everywhere, it's like bellbottoms in the seventies!! Wherever I turn there's some sort of event related to gin, or a blogpost, a pin, an instagram photo that relates to gin. I guess it's the latest fad with the cool kids. Since I'm not a kid, and am far cool for school, these fads never really take a hold of me. I seem to remember that it was only last year or two years ago that he gourmet buger thing was all over the place! Now... no one's doing them burgers anymore, and that's where I can come in!

No, seriously, I may be mostly joking but the fact is that we are flooded with these kinds of things. All of a sudden there is a product or a trend that needs to - for whatever marketing and capitalistic reasons! - be trending, and suddenly it's everywhere, and in your face all the time, to the point that, if you happen to not like that particular thing - I am always dreading the moment the deep fried cockroach is gonna be a thing!! - you end up feeling like you're less than everyone else, like you don't even belong, like you don't deserve a place in the world! This can happen, and if it is something that pertains to the food world, or drink world, and you happen to have...say, a food blog! you suddenly find yourself questioning your right to have one, if you're not having gourmet hamburgers on a daily basis nor concoting the best gin cocktails any bartender could come up with.

So I skipped the whole hamburger thing when it was rad to munch on these, mostly because I really don't like them that much, but the fact is that once in a blue moon, I do not mind caving in and let my male counterpart and our offspring - who are into homemade burgers like mad! - have their cake and eat it. Or in this case, have their pattie and eat it. But only once in a blue moon...

It kind of happens that last friday there was a blue moon, so, lo! and behold! I'm having a burger for friday night dinner! How hip of me... Frankly, sometimes it is just rather convenient to be able to toss a few bits and pieces together, you know, especially when you're on the verge of taking off for your holiday trip and are still stuck in the middle of painting your own bedroom, and are feeling quite burnt out from so much cooking and so much organising and pondering and planning your weekly meals all the time... some days you just want to sit down and eat something obvious, and easy, and nearly ready made. And a cool tall glass of beer.

We bought the patties at the market, ready made. At the one market I go to here in the Lisbon region. They have a lot of butchers there, the prices are soooo good, and the meat is good quality. The only sausages I eat are from those butchers. So it comes to figure that the only pattie I would have that was not thrown together by my hands, would also come from those butchers. Fine, juicy meat, tasty and tender, with just the right amount of fat, perfect for a crunchy bun that has been soaked up in the leftover juices on the pan!

Cheese, fresh tomatoes and crisp lettuce are a staple on a burger, I know, and had I been in some sort of mood to go and get creative, I would certainly have made myself some caramelized onions to top up the meat. Note to self: must try that pretty soon. But this was meant to be an easy meal, no fuss, no work, just come on down and assemble your own and get done with it. Husband cooked up the meat, and each of us made their own sarnie. Simple as can be, good as it gets on a hot Summer night!

A bit of good portuguese mustard, as I am such a fan of this condiment, some crisps right out of the packet - I am in no way a fundamentalist, and once in a blue moon I don't say no to a pack of crisps, salt and vinegar being my absolute nemesis, these were sea salt and balsamic vinegar, can you imagine how good they were? To. Die. For. - and you can sit down and watch the news, which is actually a perfect way of ruining a good dinner, at least here in my lil' ole' country by the sea. Still, I promised myself I wouldn't be too much of a political beast, nor would I dis fads way too much, as I know how this has been perfect for bringing me haters and enemies!

So there, I have had my burger when it isn't fashionable anymore to eat one, and I was free to munch on it, juices and condiments dripping down my chin, without feeling like I was eating a pair of Louboutins or a Birkin bag. I will not be having any gin cocktails when gin is out of favour, though, that is not to happen. I might have a lot of rum cocktails, as I recently discovered how much I really like rum. I'm a pirate, a viking scottish pirate, about to take over Ireland. Or not. Still, I'll be taking off pretty soon, and this is my last post for the remainder of this month. I won't have internet access where I'm going - well, not regular access, at least - and I am soon to start my month of detox from social media and the world wide web. The mornings are the hardest bit, you know!! See ya in a month's time, have a great vacation wherever you choose to go!
